OpenAI just raised $122 billion in a single funding round. That is the largest private raise in the history of technology. The post-money valuation hit $852 billion, placing a company with $14 billion in projected 2026 losses ahead of nearly every Fortune 500 firm by market cap. Meanwhile, $600 million in OpenAI shares listed on Forge Global at $715 per share found zero buyers, according to Bloomberg. One number says dominance. The other says doubt. Both are true at the same time, and the tension between them tells you everything about where AI infrastructure is heading.

This is not a story about one company. It is a story about whether capital, not code, now determines who wins the AI era.

The Gravity Well Principle

Here is the framework: in AI infrastructure, capital operates like a gravity well. Once a company accumulates enough mass in funding, compute, and distribution, it bends the trajectory of talent, partnerships, and enterprise contracts toward itself. Smaller players have to spend exponentially more energy to escape that pull. I call this The Gravity Well Principle.

OpenAI's flywheel is textbook. Consumer adoption feeds enterprise deployment. Enterprise revenue justifies more compute purchases. More compute improves models. Better models attract more users. They can collapse inward. If the mass is hollow, if revenue does not match the valuation, the well becomes a black hole that consumes capital without producing returns. The question is whether OpenAI's $852 billion valuation represents genuine gravitational mass or a shell inflated by circular financing and oversubscribed hype.

The Hollow Center of the Largest Round in History

Strip away the headline number and the structure of this round tells a more complicated story. Of the $122 billion in "committed capital," only about $25 billion represented confirmed upfront investment, according to analyst breakdowns reported by BeInCrypto. The remainder consisted of GPU credits, milestone-contingent pledges, and structured commitments that critics have labeled circular financing. SoftBank's paper gains alone account for $50 billion of the cap table increase.

This matters because the thesis of capital-driven dominance assumes the capital is real, liquid, and deployable. Pledges tied to future milestones are not the same as cash in a bank account. OpenAI's own CFO Sarah Friar described the round as oversubscribed and completed rapidly, with $3 billion from retail investors through bank channels for the first time. Speed and breadth of participation signal confidence. But confidence is not solvency.

The competitive landscape has shifted faster than the valuation models predicted. Anthropic's annualized revenue exploded from $9 billion at the end of 2025 to $30 billion by early April 2026, driven largely by Claude Code, a $2.5 billion enterprise tool. Google Gemini's market share nearly quadrupled to 21.5% according to Similarweb data. ChatGPT's share dropped 22 points over the same period. xAI operates a 555,000 GPU supercomputer with cheaper frontier model pricing. Meta allocated up to $135 billion for 2026 AI spending and hired former Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang.

These are not scrappy underdogs. These are companies with their own gravity wells.

Meanwhile, $2 billion in new capital queued for Anthropic instead.

The projected losses tell the rest of the story. Internal documents obtained by The Information show $14 billion in expected 2026 losses. Cumulative losses could reach $44 billion by 2029. Only 5% of ChatGPT's 800 million plus users are paid subscribers, roughly 40 million people. The conversion rate is the bottleneck, and no amount of fundraising fixes a conversion problem.

My read on this is that OpenAI's valuation reflects a bet on future monopoly rents that the present competitive dynamics do not support. The company revised its product roadmap twice in six months. A $134 billion fraud trial begins April 27, 2026, in Oakland, adding legal risk to an already fragile narrative. It is unclear whether the enterprise pivot will generate margins fast enough to justify the burn rate before the next fundraise becomes necessary.

Capital concentration creates real advantages in compute procurement, talent acquisition, and enterprise sales cycles. But it does not create a moat against open-source commoditization. Meta's Llama models are free. DeepSeek offers low-cost alternatives from China. GPU hardware could improve 3x by 2030, according to industry projections, which would devalue trillions in current data center investments and lower barriers for smaller players.

The asymmetry here cuts both ways. OpenAI has the most capital. It also has the most to lose.

Zoom out five years and the question is not whether OpenAI survives. It almost certainly does. The question is whether AI infrastructure follows the path of cloud computing or the path of mobile operating systems.

Competition persisted. Margins stayed healthy but not monopolistic. Customers multi-clouded. No single provider achieved winner-take-all.

In mobile, two platforms (iOS and Android) captured 99% of the market by 2015. Winner-take-most became winner-take-all-but-one. The economics of app distribution created lock-in that compute infrastructure alone did not.

AI infrastructure in 2031 will likely look more like cloud than mobile. The reason is that models are increasingly interchangeable at the API layer. Switching costs are low. Enterprise buyers already run multiple models for different tasks. Anthropic for reasoning. Google for search integration. Open-source for cost-sensitive workloads. The gravity well pulls, but the escape velocity is not that high.

I think the real compounding advantage will belong to whoever builds the best integration layer, not the best model. The company that makes it easiest to plug AI into existing business workflows, ERP systems, CRM platforms, supply chains, will capture the durable value. OpenAI understands this. Its Codex product and enterprise API strategy point in this direction. But so does every competitor.

The concept of impermanence applies here. Today's $852 billion valuation is a snapshot, not a destiny. Nvidia was nearly bankrupt in 2008. Apple was 90 days from insolvency in 1997. The companies that win long arcs are the ones that match capital with execution discipline and strategic focus. The "deeply unfocused" label from OpenAI's own investors is the most dangerous data point in this entire story.

By 2031, the AI infrastructure market will likely support 3 to 5 major players, not one. Capital concentration will have mattered, but not as much as product-market fit, developer experience, and cost efficiency. The gravity well bends trajectories. It does not eliminate competition.
