Ten percent odds, ninety five billion in capex

Anthropic's alignment science lead put the chance AI kills all humans within a decade above 10%1, on the same day Oracle held its fiscal 2027 capex line at $90B2 to $95B3 and Cognition shipped a coding model at 81%4 lower cost.

Anthropic Alignment Lead: Over 10%1 Extinction Risk

Evan Hubinger, Anthropic's Alignment Science Lead, said on Wednesday he personally believes there is a more than 10%1 chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade, adding that Anthropic does not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and is not clearly on track to. The post followed the...

Yemen's Houthis seized Perim island at the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint days after taking a coastal port city, while Riyadh said drones launched from Iraqi territory struck its East-West crude pipeline and Baghdad confirmed the launches.

Mood reads Greed as Oracle jumped 7%13 after hours on cloud growth while keeping fiscal 2027 capex at $90 billion2 to $95 billion3, even as crude crossed $10014 and US diesel hit a record $6.0610 a gallon.

Wild Card

Cognition's SWE-2 cut cost 81%4 and turns 58%6 versus its predecessor on the same day Oracle reaffirmed a $90 billion2 to $95 billion3 build-out: model efficiency is falling fast while infrastructure spending refuses to flinch.

Today's Focus

What else the day turns on.

01

Coding Model Cost Collapse

Cognition's SWE-2, post-trained from Kimi K3 at multi-trillion-parameter RL scale, scored 50.0%5 on FrontierCode 1.1 Main while cutting turns 58%6 and cost 81%4 versus SWE-1.7, and came in roughly 64%15 cheaper than Claude Fable 5.1 in the cited comparison. One day later Cognition rolled out its Fusion CLI. A model built on a Chinese base undercutting a frontier US lab on price is the competitive story to watch.

02

Chokepoints Feed Fuel Inflation

The Houthi seizure of Perim island puts the southern Red Sea entrance under direct pressure while the drone strike on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline hits the overland alternative. Gulf disruptions are already flowing into refined fuels: diesel averaged a record $6.055611 nationally and $7.9812 in California a day after crude crossed $10014. Diesel prices freight, farming and construction, so the pass-through to inflation data is direct.

Meta just gave a consumer agent its own persistent Linux machine, a browser, and a Stripe Link wallet, then put the whole thing behind a WhatsApp thread.

A dedicated, persistent virtual machine with its own browser is the piece that separates Muse from chat-box assistants: it can book, fill forms, sit through customer service and pay, and it asks for approval before spending. The catch is that Meta's own documentation admits it remains vulnerable to adaptive jailbreaks and prompt injection, and the model line already had a containment incident during testing in August, so the transaction limit and app scoping are not optional polish, they are the product. Worth adopting for US users who want scheduling, reminders and low-stakes bookings automated over WhatsApp; hold off on anything with real money behind it until the safety record has a few months on it.

BeatViz AI v5.0 syncs generated visuals to your track's beat, so start with one song and one character

BeatViz AI v5.0 analyses a music file and generates cinematic scenes timed to its structure, and it lets you upload your own character so the visuals stay consistent across a release. It is freemium, with paid options from $25.9027/month. Test it on a single track first: export the free result, check whether cuts land on the downbeats, and only pay once the sync holds up on your genre.

Ottermind's updated agent workspace goes from a goal to an editable deliverable; give it the sources, not just the prompt

Ottermind AI's latest update lets you start from a goal, a prompt, or a pile of source material and end with a polished, editable report or document inside one environment. The quality gap between runs comes from inputs: drop in your actual research, transcripts, or data files rather than describing them. Then edit in place instead of round-tripping through a chat window.

1Password's engineers point Codex at internal tools and frontend scaffolding; copy the internal-tools-first order

OpenAI's new case study on 1Password shows engineers using Codex to build features and internal tools faster, including agentic frontend design work where the agent lays out the UI rather than just filling in functions. Internal tools are the right proving ground: low blast radius, real users, fast feedback. Let the agent produce the first pass of a dashboard or admin panel, then keep the review bar identical to any human pull request.

THE DOJO · BUILD TODAY

Re-price your agent stack before your competitors do

  1. 01

Benchmark SWE-2 against your own repo, not the leaderboard. Take three real tickets you already shipped and rerun them through SWE-2 and your current model. The vendor claims 58% fewer turns and 81% lower cost, while a third-party test saw 35% to 39% savings, so measure where your workload actually lands.

  2. 02

Put a hard ceiling on any agent that can transact. Meta Muse runs errands in a sandbox and over WhatsApp, so set the transaction limit and the allowed-merchant list before the first task, not after the first surprise charge.

  3. 03

Feed sources, not prompts. Ottermind's updated agent workspace turns a goal into an editable deliverable, so hand it your own documents and data first. Same discipline applies to the Gemini Windows app on Alt+Space: scope which Gmail and Drive data it can reach before you make it your default launcher.

The Bottom Line

The people building it are hedging while the capex keeps clearing

Evan Hubinger runs alignment science at Anthropic and put extinction odds above 10%1 within a decade, which is a statement about the inside of the building, not a poll of outside critics. On the same day Oracle reported $28.5 billion18 in quarterly capex against $8.5 billion19 a year earlier, held $90B2 to $95B3 for fiscal 2027, and got a 7%13 after-hours share pop for the steadiness. California answered with SB 813 and AB 1405, regulating who may perform an AI audit rather than mandating the audits themselves. Builders get the useful version of this tension today: cheaper coding agents, financial-grade deployments, and a compliance surface that is starting to have names and thresholds attached.

A figure is money, a percentage, a spelled magnitude, a multiple, a rate carrying its unit, a score over its denominator, a thousands separated number or an index close. Bare integers and years are not counted, so a phrase like "over 100 integrations" carries no mark. A chart's own scale line is the axis of the level above it and is counted once, with that level.
