Block's Dessa learns from human speech alone and runs on a MacBook Pro

Block's research lab unveiled Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model trained from scratch, which it says runs on a laptop. Elsewhere, coding agents get a manager view and home humanoids get a price.

Block's Dessa model trained only on human speech

Block's research lab unveiled Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model trained from scratch on human speech alone. It runs locally on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max and trained on one NVIDIA GB200 NVL72.

Why it mattersKeep voice agents on current speech-to-text pipelines until Block opens Dessa beyond its safety-tester program; Block has given no public access date or benchmark.

Meta is handling two separate pressures at once: a New Mexico jury ordered it on October 21 to pay $25 billion3 for misleading consumers, and its updated AI terms now take effect November 20, three weeks after the original October 30 date.

What else the day turns on.

01

Websites Block Deep Research Agents

The Rundown argues AI deep research tools are not getting dumber: more websites now block or charge the agents these tools send out, so each report draws on a shrinking slice of the web.

02

Warhound Plans Engineered War Dogs

Texas-based Warhound came out of stealth backed by Colossal Biosciences founder Ben Lamm and Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, with a plan to genetically engineer war dogs for the U.S. military and law enforcement. The company intends to collect cells from elite military, police and first-responder dogs.

Devin Desktop

Windsurf now ships as Devin Desktop, and the pitch is simple: hand separate tasks to separate agents and review the pull requests as they land.

Devin Desktop takes the editor Windsurf users know and wraps it in a manager view for several agents at once, running locally or in Devin Cloud, with Cognition's SWE-2 model and frontier models from other labs on paid plans. A Gartner Peer Insights reviewer writing on Sep 1, 2026 rated it 4.0 for daily development work, which fits what is known so far: it handles scoped, independent tasks credibly. Cost under heavy parallel load is the open question, so adopt it if your backlog splits cleanly and you are willing to watch usage.

If cloud AI doesn't matter to you, pay the $20 for Devin Desktop, which is really Windsurf, and keep using it the way you always have.Paraphrased · Reddit r/windsurf

Monsoon: Scalable Spontaneous Speech Collection for Low-Resource ASR in 50 Languages

Shobhit Banga, Manas Dhir, Aaditya Pareek et al. · arXiv 2026-10-19

For most languages, automatic speech recognition (ASR) is limited less by model architecture than by a lack of accurately transcribed spontaneous speech. We present Monsoon, a framework for collecting such data at scale.

1 a). The Monsoon model is ahead in Gujarati and Telugu and within one point in Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali; only in Tamil does IndicWhisper lead by more. Monsoon therefore matches a model trained on the test sets’ own sources without having seen any of them.

THE DOJO · BUILD TODAY

Baseline your stack before the next model lands.

  1. 01

Record your voice baseline. Log current latency, interruption handling and per-minute cost for your voice agent this week. Any local model that Block or others eventually release will then have a real number to beat.

  2. 02

Audit your research sources. List which sites your deep research agents hit and check which now block or charge automated visitors. Where a report leans on few sources, add a paid feed or a direct source you control.

  3. 03

Trial a multi-agent manager view. Open Devin Desktop on one small repo and give two agents separate tasks, first locally and then in Devin Cloud. Compare merge conflicts and review time against your single-agent workflow.

The Bottom Line

Own the runtime and the sources it reads.

Dessa points toward voice models that live on your own hardware, while more websites blocking or charging research agents shows that the data feeding any agent is getting less free. Builders who control both the model location and the source list will absorb those shifts best. Meanwhile, tools like Devin Desktop make it easier to run several agents at once, which raises the stakes on what each one can reach. Start by measuring your current voice costs and source coverage so any change can be judged against facts.

A figure is money, a percentage, a spelled magnitude, a multiple, a rate carrying its unit, a score over its denominator, a thousands separated number or an index close. Bare integers and years are not counted, so a phrase like "over 100 integrations" carries no mark. A chart's own scale line is the axis of the level above it and is counted once, with that level.
