OpenAI goes vertical while Huawei pulls its clock forward

Astra for Law pairs GPT-6 Astra with a curated index of U.S. case law and statutes, landing the same week Huawei moved the Ascend 960 timetable up and Trump called Iran a "major decision point".

OpenAI Launches Astra For Law Platform

OpenAI unveiled Astra for Law, a legal-focused platform built on GPT-6 Astra that pairs the model with an index of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, and other legal materials for research, drafting, and custom application building. The launch includes integrations with Harvey, Legora, Relativity, Clio, Intapp,...

President Trump said his administration has reached a 'major decision point' on resuming large-scale attacks on Iran, the sharpest escalation signal since the Hormuz talks collapsed, even as it approved visas for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Markets

US stocks closed higher Thursday as oil retreated on the expected Saudi pipeline restart and Treasury yields dipped from the 5%3 level, one day after the Fed's first hike since 2023 took the policy rate to 4.00%4; the mood reads Greed.

Wild Card

Google's new Gemini harness cuts output tokens on file changes by 40 percent while Huawei's Ascend 960 Supernode targets 100-trillion-parameter models with 8 exaflops of FP8 compute: one side is squeezing efficiency out of agents, the other is betting on raw scale.

Today's Focus

What else the day turns on.

01

Huawei's Supernode Timetable

Huawei unveiled the Ascend 960 Supernode at its 2026 developer conference, claiming 4,0961 cards per node, up to 8 exaflops of FP8 compute, and 1 petabyte of HBM capacity aimed at 100-trillion-parameter models. The company also pulled the launch schedule forward, per executive Wang Tao. The specifications are Huawei's own, and the story is a timetable and a target, not shipped silicon in customer hands.

02

Rebound Rests On A Pipeline

Thursday's higher close came as oil retreated on an expected restart of Saudi Arabia's east-west pipeline within days, yet Saudi Arabia and the Houthis exchanged fresh fire the same day, with the Houthis claiming Saudi strikes killed one person and hit three telecommunications towers. Add Trump's Iran signal and India's refusal to stop buying Russian oil despite a 100%5 tariff threat, and the inputs behind lower oil and softer yields look fragile. Greed is the reading; the Gulf headlines are the risk.

Productivity Free tier; Pro and Team prices not published a few minutes for the web app

NeuralAgent

It claims to click through your desktop in about 285 milliseconds per action, and the free plan lets you test that promise ten times a day without handing over a card.

Two products wear this name right now: an open-source desktop agent that drives Windows and macOS like a human would, and the web app at neuralagent.app that schedules research, writing, and monitoring agents into a searchable Memory on ten free tasks a day. The zero-cost, no-card entry makes it cheap to trial for recurring digests and competitor checks, and that is where it earns a spot. Independent testing amounts to one 7/10 writeup and a handful of Product Hunt ratings, so nobody should let it loose on a machine full of logged-in accounts yet.

Claude Docs, Slides, and Design now live inside the chat; draft the deck in the same thread as the research

Anthropic is folding Cowork and chat into a single One Claude app, and Docs, Slides, and Design are rolling out to paid users so you can write a spec, turn it into a deck, and iterate on the visuals without leaving the conversation. The practical win is context: the model that read your sources is the one laying out the slides. Test it on an internal update first, where a layout miss costs nothing, and check whether the export survives a round trip into your existing office suite before you move client work over.

Lumi.new surfaced on There's An AI For That with a near-empty listing; run the alternatives panel before the landing page

The directory entry for Lumi.new shows generic task tags for image and text generation and almost no description of what the product actually does, which is itself useful information about how early or how thinly marketed it is. Use the directory's Show alternatives and Show pricing buttons to see what category it is competing in, then visit the site with one concrete task in hand. If you cannot state what it does after five minutes on the page, that is your answer for now.

Claude for small business adds 43 workflows and 27 integrations; pick one workflow and one integration, then measure

Anthropic's small business package now ships with 43 prebuilt workflows and 27 integrations, which is exactly the kind of catalogue that gets adopted broadly and used nowhere. Choose the single recurring task that costs your team the most hours each week, wire up only the integration it needs, and track the time saved for two weeks before enabling anything else. Breadth is the vendor's selling point; depth on one workflow is where the return shows up.

Meta AI's developer tools are pitched at building responsive products; treat the platform as a model source, not a workflow

The FutureTools listing frames Meta AI as a set of tools for businesses and developers to build more intelligent products, services, and experiences, which is broad by design. If you are evaluating it, do so the way you would any model provider: define one user-facing feature, build it behind a swappable interface, and compare latency and output quality against your current provider on the same test set. Do not let the platform's distribution across Meta's apps decide your architecture for you.

  2. 02

Pick one workflow and one integration. Claude for small business ships 43 workflows and 27 integrations; choose exactly one of each, run it for a week, and record time saved rather than adding a second.

The Bottom Line

Vertical products and earlier silicon are the same bet

OpenAI's Astra for Law is not a chatbot with a legal prompt, it is a model plus a curated corpus of case law, statutes and regulations, which is the shape serious vertical AI now takes. Huawei pulling the Ascend 960 forward says the same thing from the hardware side: the constraint is delivery timing, not ambition. For builders, the lesson is narrower and duller than the headlines - Agility's 65,0002 hours and Google's two new agent APIs both reward whoever does the unglamorous integration work. Choose one domain, wire the data properly, and measure it before you add the next tool.

A figure is money, a percentage, a spelled magnitude, a multiple, a rate carrying its unit, a score over its denominator, a thousands separated number or an index close. Bare integers and years are not counted, so a phrase like "over 100 integrations" carries no mark. A chart's own scale line is the axis of the level above it and is counted once, with that level.
